Velasco grew up in Lake Como, and sailboats are familiar to him since childhood. His paintings are alive with the energy of three worlds -- the air, the water, and the fragile boats in between. Some paintings are peaceful, with perhaps a boat in harbor in the still hour before nightfall. Others may show the festiveness of a regatta, or a boat racing for home through rain and choppy waters, just ahead of a darkening squall. The dip of sail, the angle of sloop to water -- all impart a clarity of sensation which is transmitted to the viewer undiluted by time or place.
