The preparation of the backgrounds
is an integral part of Madiai's technique. Multiple color
washes are used to create an amorphous, textured background
that contrasts boldly with the meticulously detailed foreground
subject. Often, once a painting appears completed, the artist
will pour it a thick, liberative coat of paint onto the
canvas, essentially obliterating the image. The paint covers
everything but by slowly tilting the canvas, certain areas
are covered more thickly, and in the end, there is a mellow
and uniform glaze, virtually a diffuse tonal assonance.
Finally, he uses the brush again to carefully bring the
objects in the painting into focus, rescuing the image.
With this technique, the eye does not see everything, while
the memory retains only what is truly important. In this
way, Madiai liberates the subject from its banal setting.
